The project H2 South Tyrol has the goal to produce hydrogen using South Tyrolean renewable energy sources. It is an initiative by IIT Hydrogen and represents an innovative approach to face the challenges regarding energy and the environment. Green hydrogen is considered a clean energy source and plays an important role in the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
We were founded in 2012 as a small institute within a pioneering initiative of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano in cooperation with Alperia and the Brenner Motorway A22, financed by the ERDF, European Regional Development Fund.
Since then, we have gained experience also thanks to our production plant and boast an important record: now that green hydrogen is a concrete and tangible reality, we are proud to consider ourselves one of the companies with the most important hydrogen expertise in our country. We look forward to spreading our know-how and accelerating the path towards the decarbonisation of our society.

Planning hydrogen systems requires profound knowledge of the relevant technologies and regulations. These systems find application in various sectors such as energy, industry, transport and green hydrogen production. The planning process is complex, requires multidisciplinary competences and accurate planning. Collaborating with experts in the field is essential to face challenges like the safe handling and distribution of the hydrogen.
Planning the new hydrogen filling station open to the public includes a hydrogen supply system for busses, trucks, and cars. The hydrogen is going to be provided using trailers with integrated compression and storage systems and three 350 and 700 bar dispensers.
Planning the production and refuelling facility with hydrogen for local public transportation (LPT) includes the construction of a plant which covers the production of hydrogen, its compression, the storage, and the supply with three dispensers for busses and cars.

Over the years, we were able to complete projects with a positive influence on the environment and our society. Since 2012, we have been pioneers in our field on a national and international level implementing a new way of interpreting the energy development.
The program LIFE 2021-2027 is the only EU funding for environmental, climatic, and energetic goals. It promotes an efficient, clean, circular, and climate-resilient economy, supporting the transition towards a clean energy to improve the quality of the environment. LIFE has already financed more than 5,000 projects.
The goal is to develop, demonstrate, and promote innovative approaches to reach the environmental and climatic goals of the EU, improving the governance and facilitating the spread of successful solutions on a broad level, integrating the goals in other policies and practices, and facilitating investments.
The integrated project LIFEalps (LIFE17 IPC IT 000005 – Zero Emission LIFE IP) guides and promotes the development of a emission-free transport and mobility system on the roads in the area of South Tyrol, along the Brenner Corridor, one of the main European transport axes, and in the adjacent regions. The European project LIFEalps aims to make South Tyrol a role model for emission-free mobility in the Alps.
The project includes a series of actions to contribute to climate protection and the fight against climate change, split into four key categories:
Creation of an electric pilot fleet: Implementing a pilot fleet with different hydrogen vehicles.
Development of sustainable services: Creating innovative, emission-free services to favour a sustainable mobility.
The project “MEHRLIN” was a practical research project co-financed by the European Commission through the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency. Involving seven partners from four countries (UK, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy), the project collected technical and economic data on respective hydrogen filling stations. As a partner of the project, IIT analysed and evaluated this basic data to maximise the efficiency. Furthermore, IIT worked on the financial viability of Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS). The results of this research, which lasted seven years, where implemented in practical proposals and inserted in the catalogue of the EU, with the goal of optimizing future HRS.
EMPOWER is the acronym of “Eco-operated, Modular, highly efficient, and flexible multi-POWERtrain for long-haul heavy-duty vehicles”. The project, identified with the code Horizon Europe GA no. 101096028, aims to develop two zero emission heavy vehicles (ZE HDV) which are flexible, modular, and scalable. One of these vehicles is going to be completely electric with a range of 400km, meant for regional deliveries. The other vehicle is going to be hybrid, using a fuel cell as well as batteries with a range of 750km and meant to cover long distances. Both vehicles are going to be tested in a demonstration of 6 months at TRL8 on European roads and international corridors. The projects will be led by a consortium of experts with academic partners and European industrials.
The Bolzano Hydrogen Centre is located in Bolzano Sud near the Bolzano Sud motorway exit. It can be reached either by public transport (with the last stretch to be covered on foot) or by private transport.
